Eta Omega Omega Chapter
The Eta Omega Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® celebrates a rich history of service, philanthropy and scholarship for the Bronx, New York community.
Eta Omega Omega was chartered with 12 members, in the Northeast Bronx on May 23, 1964.
Eta Omega Omega boasts the distinction of being the proud supervising chapter of the only undergraduate chapter that has ever been chartered on a City University of New York (CUNY) campus. On the campus of Herbert H. Lehman College, the Xi Xi chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® was chartered in 1983. Under the chapter’s 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization, Wheeler, Wilson & Johnson Community Projects Inc., founded in 1994, Eta Omega Omega awards scholarships annually to college-bound students. Its annual HBCU luncheon raises funds for the scholarships and celebrates community-based organizations and individuals who are making a difference.
Eta Omega Omega affectionately (referred to the BronxAKAs) has been most instrumental in the implementation of international community service days in the Bronx. These efforts highlight Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority’s collective service impact programs, which include:
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service (January)
Pink Goes Red for Heart Health Day (February)
1908 Playgrounds Mobilization Day (May)
The Longest Day™ Alzheimer’s Support Activities (June)
Mental Health Awareness Day (July)
Childhood Hunger Awareness Day (October)
The Chapter’s signature program, AKATeens Rites of Passage (ROP) program for high school girls, is in its 31st year. The ROP program helps the girls develop leadership and life skills to build self-confidence and social responsibility. In order to promote and support Black-owned businesses, Eta Omega Omega hosts “Black Entrepreneurship Day” annually in the fall at Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem. And, under its AKArosa ecology program, the chapter is a participant in the Adopt-A-Highway Program.
As a large-sized chapter, with 137 members, Eta Omega Omega is proud of its many achievements. Most recently, in recognition of our work, the chapter won the “2017 Chapter of the Year” award at the sorority’s North Atlantic Regional Conference held in April in Baltimore, Maryland, 2019 North Bronx National Council of Negro Women Women of Distinction Award and 2019 Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Xi Phi Chapter Community Partner Award for Scholarship.
In 2021, we celebrated the 113th anniversary of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated® and the 57th anniversary of Eta Omega Omega. We approach these milestones with a renewed commitment to fulfilling the legacy of our founders through perseverance and in perpetuity.
